How and when will pay be deducted following strike action?

Any deductions shall be calculated on the basis of actual hours not worked up to a maximum of eight hours (pro-rata for LTFT). The hourly rate applicable is based on the following formula:

Basic Salary + Banding Supplement/GP Specialty Registrar supplement; divided by 52.148; then divide that by your assumed maximum hours and that will give you your hourly rate.

The Assumed maximum hours for each band is as follows:

  • Band 1C = 48
  • Band 1B = 48
  • Band 1A = 48
  • Band 2B = 56
  • Band 2A = 56
  • Band 3 = 56
  • GP Registrar allowance = 48

It is unlikely that your pay will be deducted in the month that you take strike action.

How will I know on my payslip where deductions have been made?

Strike deductions appear on HSC pay-slips under the descriptor “Super-Annuable Pay Adjusted".

Can I avail of the strike fund once the pay deductions are made?

No, applications for strike fund assistance must be made for each round of action ahead of the strike dates. You cannot retrospectively apply to the strike fund for a round of action that occurred in the past.

You can also only apply for the Strike Fund from the second and any subsequent round of industrial action.

If I was on a LTFT contract at the time of the strike action, how will I be deducted?

Deductions will be applied as a pro-rata equivalent maximum for LTFT resident doctors based on your whole time equivalent on the specific day of industrial action.

I took part in strike action during my maternity qualifying weeks. How will I be deducted?

Please refer to guidance issued previously regarding maternity leave and strike action.

I am a member of the HSC Pension Scheme. Will pension contributions be recalculated?

If you contribute to the HSC Pensions Scheme, no pension contributions will be collected on days when you are on strike and these days cannot reckon as pensionable membership for benefit purposes. The number of days lost will be recorded as disallowed days.

What if I think I have been deducted incorrectly?

Please contact NIMDTA / SLE at [email protected] immediately to flag this up. You can also flag this with BMA by logging your query through our first point of contact service.
