The demand for private general practitioner services is steadily increasing throughout the United Kingdom, largely due to patients' desire for prompt appointments, continuity of care, and expanded options. For GPs contemplating a transition into private practice, establishing a clinic presents both substantial opportunities and notable complexities. Achieving success in this environment requires not only clinical proficiency but also a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements, compliance protocols, governance frameworks, and comprehensive operational planning.

This marks the inaugural event outlining the functions of the private practice committee (PPC) and the support and resources available for those considering establishing their own private practice. The purpose of this event is to bring together GPs interested in entering private practice and to enhance awareness of resources and guidance regarding the process.
The event aims to provide concise, relevant information on key considerations, recommended contacts, and offers participants the opportunity to ask questions.
About the presenters
Dr Shaima Villait is a General Practitioner practising in Chelsea. She qualified from Imperial College in 1998 and completed post graduate specialist training in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Medicine, Psychiatry and Accident and Emergency in top London Teaching Hospitals. She obtained Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2003. She believes in the importance of a family doctor’s role in providing a holistic approach for patients. Having lived and worked abroad, in Hong Kong and Dubai, she has a keen interest in international medicine, ensuring her patients are provided with the best care available in London and internationally. She has worked as a private GP for 20 years. She specialises in all aspects of family medicine, including child health, adolescent health, men’s health, women’s health and psychiatry. Using all her specialist experience she also thinks it is important to look at patients as a whole, looking for the root cause of their symptoms discussing their lifestyle and nutrition as part of her assessment where appropriate. She has excellent relationships with World Class Specialists across all fields of medicine and surgery, and can contact them urgently when required. Dr Villait is the Deputy Chair (Primary Care) for the BMA Private Practice Committee, and she is also the GP Chair for the Independent Doctor’s Federation.
Dr Oliver Denton BSc MB BS MRCGP studied at Imperial College School of Medicine, qualifying in 2001. Having started as a surgical trainee with an interest in paediatrics he changed to General Practice in 2007. He has been a Member of the Royal College of Practitioners since 2008. Having worked as a Locum, Salaried and NHS Partner he set up Daleswood Health in 2015. As the private practice was growing, he worked as an NHS and private Locum GP. As a generalist he has interests in Dermatology, Minor Surgery, Point of care Ultrasound and Men’s Health.
