I am a new member to the sessional GP subcommittee of the GPC and have joined the committee mid-way through its 3 year term. I was delighted to be able to fill the vacant position for the representative of the South East Coast area and am looking forward to being able to contribute my thoughts and ideas.
I qualified as a GP in 2014 and have since worked in central London and more recently in a semi-rural practice in Kent. I did my undergraduate training in London and moved throughout London over the subsequent years to complete my foundation and GPVTS training. I joined my local LMC (Kent) last year shortly after moving to the area as I was keen to gain an understanding of local services and issues facing general practice and be able to represent myself and my sessional colleagues - I now chair the sessional sub-committee within Kent. I quickly became aware that whilst many issues in general practice are common to all types of GPs, there are a number of issues faced by sessional GPs that are quite different to those of partners. However, at times it can feel as though sessional issues are not felt to carry as much importance as those facing GP partners. Therefore, I feel that our voice as sessional GPs is even more vital in a national forum and the sessional subcommittee of the GPC is an ideal vehicle for that. As such, I’ve quickly been very impressed by the focus and drive of the current sessional subcommittee.
Having worked in a large city and now in a semi-rural practice I have seen very different ways of practicing and that the issues facing these practices can be very unique. And within that, the role of sessional GPs can be very diverse as well. Therefore, I see the importance in representing all sessional GPs working in all settings, each with their own unique challenges.
I also have a young family and relatively recently went on maternity leave for a year. During this time and during my return to work afterwards, I became aware of the issues facing parents with regards to maternity pay, pregnancy related issues at work and working when you also have childcare responsibilities. I feel that given the current workforce crisis within general practice we need to ensure that all GPs who wish to work are supported in doing so, and a large part of that workforce includes people with responsibilities as carers.
As sessional GPs make up such a large part of the GP workforce it is vital that we are included in key decision making and that our voices are heard and equally respected. I look forward to representing the South East Coast on a national level and invite any local constituents to approach me with any issues that are facing them.
