Have any of you considered working on the beautiful west coast of Scotland? I worked for many years on the tiny island of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde at its dispensing practice doing summer locums. While finishing my most recent part of my Scottish tour I was reminded of the fabulous family summers I spent there (yes- they came too).
For me, it was a relatively short drive by car from my home in the Glasgow area to Kilmarnock. This beautiful area of Scotland is surrounded by islands and is generally covered by very remote rural areas, which is contrasted with some areas of urban deprivation. As with a lot of the UK, mining and other long-gone industries have left their legacy of industrial injuries and unemployment.
As usual, I was made to feel very welcome by the Ayrshire and Arran LMC members. I was privileged to hear about their issues and priorities at a local level, and nationally. The new Scottish GP contract is in the process of being implemented and I have been informed that recent appointments of pharmacists and physiotherapists have been made into their new posts. There was a considerable amount of discussion at the meeting around training and subsequent retention of staff, as well as how these new members of staff will be accommodated appropriately.
There are two Ayrshire hospitals which are part of the University of Glasgow Medical School and medical students are being educated in this Health Board. As a GP tutor I have been to both hospitals with groups of medical students. It was also encouraging to see the GP trainee rep at the meeting.
It was interesting to learn that this Health Board has the highest opioid-prescribing (remember its industrial injuries background) figures for Scotland. We all know that as GPs, this is an area which needs to be tackled but requires funding, training and time to address.
While I was there, we received very heartening news regarding the Performers’ List (all 14 Health Boards in Scotland have a separate list, as this is determined by Government legislation). This was the first time that more GPs had joined it than left, and everyone at the meeting was very encouraged by this.
For those interested in coming to work in Ayrshire and Arran there is provision when you join its Performers list, to be added to others in Scotland. Might it be for you?
