Responding to yesterday’s vote in the Senedd to extend and increase the minimum unit price for alcohol in Wales, Dr Iona Collins, chair of the BMA’s Welsh Council said:
“This is a welcome step forward in tackling the devastating effects of alcohol abuse. If we can prevent serious harm before it happens, we can help to improve the health of our communities and reduce the significant burden on our health service.
“All the evidence suggests that this policy, which we have campaigned long and hard for saves lives. We’re encouraged to see the Welsh Government not only extend its implementation but go one step further by increasing the minimum unit price to 65p, bringing it in line with Scotland, where we know this has been a success.
“Preventing alcohol and drug-related deaths is one of the BMA’s top priorities as outlined in our Senedd manifesto health in our hands. As well as this important piece of legislation we would like to see the Welsh Government bolster their efforts in this area by investing further in drug and alcohol services, and reducing the availability and advertisements of low-cost, high-strength alcohol.
“In short, this policy offers hope and a brighter future for vulnerable people exposed to the harmful effects of alcohol, but we want to see policymakers go further to create a healthier, more prosperous Wales.”
