Major survey shows scale of doctor unemployment crisis

More than half of FY2 (foundation year 2) doctors have no job to go to next month, according to a BMA survey.

Some 4,401 doctors were asked whether they have substantive employment or regular locum work from next month. Of the 1,062 FY2 doctors who responded, 52 per cent said they did not. Overall, a third (34 per cent) of the doctors who responded did not.

The results of the poll, conducted between 21 and 28 July, has led the BMA to seek a deal with the Government to tackle the looming unemployment crisis.

This year, there were more than 30,000 doctors applying for just 10,000 specialty training places.

The BMA has now opened an additional linked dispute with Government and is demanding pay restoration and a solution to the training bottlenecks.

BMA resident doctors committee co-chairs Ross Nieuwoudt and Melissa Ryan said: ‘Throughout this dispute, ballot and industrial action, one thing we have heard from our colleagues is the genuine fear and real worry about being able to secure a job in the future. Today’s survey results show these fears realised.'
