The BMA is gravely concerned that medical neutrality and the health-related human rights of protestors are being violated in Iran.
Since the protests erupted in Iran, verified accounts of attacks on multiple hospitals have been reported – including reports of patients and medical workers being attacked and security forces arbitrarily arresting protestors from hospitals.
Under international human rights law, medical facilities and healthcare workers must not be attacked or impeded from being able to carry out their duties. Those who require treatment and care must be able to access healthcare services and doctors must be allowed to treat all patients according to their medical needs. Protestors must be allowed to access medical care without fear of arbitrary arrest and doctors must be allowed to treat them without fear of repercussions.
We call on Iranian authorities to ensure respect for medical neutrality and the human rights of its people.
