About this webinar
Cisheteronormativity refers to the assumption that being straight and cisgender is the default or normal way of being. This assumption can lead to poor care and outcomes for LGBTQ+ patients, but can also impact on the wellbeing and acceptance of LGBTQ+ doctors within the profession. This panel discussion, hosted by PROUD@BMA, will bring together several medical leaders with both expertise and lived experience to discuss the impact of cisheteronormativity within the profession, and how best to support, empower, and celebrate queer doctors.
Guest speakers
Dr Kamilla Kamaruddin (she/her) is a GP and lead clinician at the East of England gender service. Her work brings together clinical practice, service development, education, and policy engagement in trans healthcare. Her work is grounded in a commitment to person-centred, evidence-informed care and to addressing the structural barriers that continue to affect trans communities, and she has written and spoken about her own experience of transition within the profession.
Dr Alison Berner (she/her/ella) is a clincian and researcher working at the interface of gender affirming healthcare and medical oncology as the lead for the UK Cancer and Transition Service (UCATS) and as a senior lecturer in Medical Oncology at Queen Mary's University of London. She is the President of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS). She is an advocate for inclusivity and her personal experience as an LGBTQ+ doctor informs and enriches her work.
Dr Jo Hartland (they/them) is a Senior Lecturer and the Deputy Education Director at Bristol Medical School. Their research interests include marginalised people’s learning experiences, professionalism as a gatekeeping device, and decolonising health education.
