Our purpose
Proud@BMA was formed in 2024 as a self-organisation of LGBTQ+ members to strengthen LGBTQ+ leadership and support members who want to promote inclusive policies.
Our focus is to:
- provide guidance to members wanting to submit and progress motions on BMA policies, campaigns, and initiatives to advance LGBTQ+ rights for members and the population.
- provide lived experience and support to stakeholders to help them create, implement and support healthcare policies, campaigns, and initiatives to advance LGBTQ+ rights for members and the population.
- inspire continuous personal and professional development of LGBTQ+ members on BMA bodies, within a trusted, inclusive, collegial group that emphasises growth, peer support, learning and leadership.
We recognise that the collaboration of different voices at all levels and from all backgrounds is key to unlocking our collective potential and strengthening our inclusive culture. The network is founded on the principle of inclusion and is explicitly trans-inclusive, and we aim to be intersectional in our work.
What we do
We aim to:
- raise the profile of LGBTQ+ doctors and their contribution to the NHS and BMA
- connect and network with grassroot members, bringing their lived experiences, knowledge, and diverse ideas to the network and to the wider BMA
- support and provide guidance for members who want to shape policy, campaigns, and initiatives to advance LGBTQ+ rights for members and the population
- provide lived experience and support to stakeholders to benefit our Association and the wider population.
Who can join the Proud@BMA network?
The Proud@BMA is open to all BMA elected members from committees, councils, divisions, and forums, as well as LNCs (local negotiating committees) or LMCs (local medical committees), who identify as LGBTQ+.
