Responding to today’s NHS performance data, BMA council chair Dr Tom Dolphin said:

“The progress we’ve seen in recent months at bringing down the waiting list is due to the hard work, dedication and commitment of doctors and their colleagues across the country. As the Health Secretary says, it would be a shame to undo this progress if doctors are forced to go on strike once again.

“Data like today’s demonstrates the value of doctors who give their all in hospitals, GP practices and elsewhere to treat patients and keep the public well. But they can not be expected to continue giving their all on goodwill alone.

“The Government and NHS England both state today that the modest improvements we’ve seen so far are down to staff’s hard work. They now need to demonstrate this with more than words and commit to restoring doctors’ pay and value, so that in the short-term we don’t lose any days to strike action, and going forward don’t lose any more doctors from the NHS when they’re needed most.”
