Dr Lucy-Jane Davis has been elected chair of the BMA’s sessional GP committee, which is part of the General Practitioners Committee (GPC).
A locum GP, Dr Davis works in rural and coastal areas of Devon and East Cornwall, as well as teaching at Peninsula Medical School. She received her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2023, having initially trained in Public Health and taken time out to have children.
Commenting on her election, sessional GPs committee chair Dr Lucy-Jane Davis said:
“I am deeply committed to improving the working lives of sessional GPs and I am delighted to have been elected as chair of the sessional GP committee.
“I am very aware of the challenges that our salaried and locum GP workforce face at the moment, from lack of employment to huge variability of how the model contract works in practice. The next few years are likely to bring significant changes to the GP landscape, with large private companies stepping in to provide more services, including the likely neighbourhood structures. Whilst there is much we still don't know about how these services will be delivered, the one thing that remains certain is that I will fight to protect the rights of members and improve our pay and working conditions, whoever their employer may be, now and in the future. Whatever shape general practice takes, the committee’s job remains exactly the same: to make sure sessional GPs get the best possible deal.
"I'd like to pay tribute to Dr Amy Small and Dr Kim Rollinson who have been fantastic co-chairs; their dedication to the committee has been outstanding. Their work on the Know Your Rights campaign to help sessional GPs better understand their rights has been vital. I look forward to working with them over the coming years.”
Dr Davis takes over the role from outgoing sessional GP committee co-chairs Dr Amy Small and Dr Kim Rollinson with immediate effect.
Outgoing sessional GPs committee co-chairs Dr Kim Rollinson and Dr Amy Small said:
“We’d like to thank all our members for your support and engagement over the past year. It has been a privilege to represent sessional GPs - the grassroots clinical workforce delivering frontline primary care every day. We firmly believe that every part of the GP workforce must thrive if general practice is to survive and flourish and that belief has underpinned our work throughout the year.
“We’ve worked to ensure the voices of sessional GPs have been heard, while building relationships, influencing negotiations and championing positive change across the UK.
“We’re delighted to welcome Dr Lucy-Jane Davis as the new chair of the sessional GPs Committee and wish her every success in leading the committee forward. We’re both pleased to be continuing on the committee as Regional Representatives for the next two years, where we’ll continue supporting the committee and championing progress for sessional GPs.”
