The British Medical Association welcomes the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, and the release of hostages this morning.
The ceasefire comes as a BMA-backed resolution was passed at the World Medical Association (WMA) General Assembly this weekend, condemning attacks by Israeli forces on healthcare facilities in Gaza during the conflict.
Since the attack by Hamas in October 2023, the BMA has repeatedly called for the end of all hostilities and release of hostages by Hamas, and the release of healthcare workers being arbitrarily detained by Israel.
The resolution passed at the WMA General Assembly in Portugal, proposed by the Turkish Medical Association, echoes calls from the BMA for healthcare facilities and staff to be protected as enshrined under international humanitarian law, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid. It also calls on all national medical associations to condemn attacks on healthcare. It instructs the World Health Organisation to undertake a comprehensive review of the full extent of the damage to healthcare infrastructure in Gaza, in order to prepare for the necessary restoration and rebuilding of health services.
BMA international committee chair and head of delegation to the WMA Dr Kitty Mohan said:
“After more than two years of this horrific conflict that has seen tens of thousands killed and healthcare services in Gaza all but obliterated, we must welcome this ceasefire and the return of hostages to their families. They are likely to now have unique health needs, requiring specialist care going forward.
“Throughout this conflict we have seen repeated attacks on healthcare buildings, staff and patients in Gaza, despite clear protections under international humanitarian law, with barely any health infrastructure now left standing. Only by maintaining peace, and the upholding of international humanitarian law, can Gaza hope to be able to now rebuild any sense of a healthcare system and look after the population.
“We thank the Turkish Medical Association for proposing this weekend’s motion at the WMA, and its passing could not be more timely. It is an important and long-overdue recognition by global medical leaders of the devastating impact that the conflict has had on healthcare in Gaza and the health of its people and the long road ahead to restore this.”
