Responding to the Government’s call for evidence on protecting the title “nurse”, Dr Emma Runswick, deputy chair of BMA council, said:

"Just as no one should be led to think they've seen a doctor when they actually haven't, so the same is true of nurses.

"It is good to see Government moving to crack down on the misuse of the “nurse” title: if patients are going to have faith in the system and its safety, they have to know they are being treated by the right professional.

"But if Government really wants to protect patients, it must go much further to make sure the unsafe substitution of both doctors and nurses by less qualified staff ends. It is not enough to protect titles if NHS organisations are permitted free reign to replace doctors and nurses with less qualified staff.

"Just as doctors are being substituted for physician assistants and other healthcare workers, nurses are being increasingly substituted for nurse associates. The forthcoming long-term workforce plan provides an opportunity for the Government to protect the distinct roles and remits of uniquely qualified doctors and nurses."
