Responding to Monday’s attack on Nasser hospital in Gaza, BMA representative body chair Dr Amit Kochhar said:

“We are horrified at this latest attack on Nasser hospital that has left health workers and journalists dead. Our thoughts are with our colleagues in Gaza and all those who were killed as they cared for people and documented the atrocities unfolding, and their families and loved ones.

“Doctors across the UK and the world will be outraged as a healthcare facility was again hit, not once, but twice, when people bravely came to the aid of those hurt in the first strike and to report on the attack.

“Under international humanitarian law, healthcare is protected and should not be attacked, yet in this conflict we have repeatedly seen healthcare facilities and medical staff hit, and a humanitarian crisis and famine unfold due to Israel blocking aid.

“The British Government’s response must not be just in words, but in action, using its international influence both to push for a ceasefire, and to ensure respect for the protections afforded to healthcare under international humanitarian law.

“Medicine is an international profession, and as doctors we must call out when our colleagues and patients come under attack.”
