Responding to the Armed Forces Pay Review Body’s (AFPRB) recommendations, BMA armed forces committee chair Dr Sandy Wood said:
"This recommendation neglects to account for the unique pressures on Armed Forces doctors. By seemingly failing to engage with our evidence and sticking to a 'one-size-fits-all' approach, the AFPRB is refusing to make specific recommendations for medical and dental officers whose pay is still behind that of their NHS colleagues - who themselves are already being undervalued.
"By moving to a reporting cycle of every two years, the AFPRB is failing in its basic duty to keep military pay comparable with civilian life. Our members deserve a process that recognises the reality of their service, rather than one that allows military medical pay to fall even further behind the rest of the profession."
