What is the MLA?
The MLA is an exam sat by final year medical students, ensuring they meet the standard for safe practice to join the medical register. It recently replaced the SJT (Situational Judgement Test) and consists of two components – the AKT (Applied Knowledge Test), and the CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment).
The MLA covers six domains:
- Person-centred care
- Communication and consultation skills
- Clinical and practical skills
- Medical knowledge and clinical reasoning
- Professionalism and patient safety
These domains ensure that new doctors are well-equipped to practice safely and effectively from day one.
