We’re inviting all GP practices in England to take part in the BMA’s 2025 practice finance survey. Your responses will be vital in strengthening the evidence base for the 2026/27 contract consultations and future negotiations.

The BMA recognises the significant financial pressures facing GP contractors and practice managers. This annual survey is a key opportunity to demonstrate the real impact of sustained inflation and rising costs over recent years, and to extend the reach and increase responses, we’re working in collaboration with Practice Index and the Institute of IGPM (General Practice Management).

The survey has been developed for complete security and validity, protected by enhanced login options in the Practice Index HUB. A secure login protects confidentiality and saves your responses for future use. Making a single submission on behalf of the practice is time-efficient and avoids unnecessary duplication.

Submitting your survey data should take less than 10 minutes, provided you complete a few simple steps to ensure you’re set up in advance.

Please follow the relevant steps below, depending on whether or not you already have a Practice Index HUB account.

As practice accounts data is sensitive, access is restricted by default. Only the HUB owner can view and submit data on behalf of the practice, although they can grant access to other users if required.

You’ll need a copy of your practice accounts covering the last two years to hand to complete the survey successfully.

Accessing the BMA finance survey

If you already have a Practice Index HUB account, you’ll need to either be the HUB Owner (usually the practice manager) or ask the HUB owner to assign access rights to the survey.

If you’re not the HUB Owner, you can find your HUB Owner by heading to the HUB, clicking the ‘Help’ icon at the top and then ‘HUB managers’.

Here, you’ll see a list of ‘HUB managers’, and one ‘owner’.

Navigate to FINANCE > BMA Survey

If you cannot see the BMA survey, you do not yet have the correct access rights.

In order to make this available to you, the HUB owner needs to make you a ‘BMA survey manager’ or ‘BMA survey viewer’; they can do this under your staff profile and the tab titled ‘HUB Roles’.

Alternatively, your HUB owner can fill in the survey for your practice.

If your practice doesn’t already have a HUB account:

Your practice manager will need to set up the account. Ask them to head to: https://hub.practiceindex.co.uk/

Click  ‘Register a new account

 Choose ‘I’m registering a practice’

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive an email when your account has been verified and it’s ready to access.

Your practice manager can then add staff members to the HUB by heading to ‘staff’ and clicking ‘Add New Staff

Once you have access to the survey

Head to Finance > BMA Survey in the left-hand menu.

If you can’t see this, you don’t currently have the correct access rights.

Use your practice accounts, National Workforce Reporting Service data or your PCSE statement to find the applicable detail.

You can save your data to come back to, should you need it, and once you’re happy, click ‘Save and submit'.
