In response to new resources published today by the General Medical Council (GMC) to better support victims and survivors of sexual misconduct Dr Latifa Patel, BMA representative body chair and workforce lead, said:
“The new resources released today by the GMC are a crucial step in supporting those impacted by sexual misconduct by doctors. They clarify the essential roles and responsibilities doctors have in preventing sexual misconduct, as well as the barriers - such as navigating the investigative process and accessing support - that often discourage victims from coming forward. We continue to urge the GMC and the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service to ensure that their investigations are conducted fairly and that sanctions for doctors found guilty of sexual misconduct towards colleagues or patients are stringent enough to deter this behaviour, to restore the confidence of victims and survivors and protect the integrity of the profession.”
