In response to the announcement of an additional £2.27 million for GP services, Dr Alan Stout, BMA Northern Ireland General Practitioners committee chair, said: "This additional funding for GP services is very welcome.
"Practices continue to work very hard to provide as good access as is possible over the winter and over the Christmas period in particular. The Christmas and New Year holiday period can be very busy for GPs and practice staff, so being able to offer additional urgent appointments is good news for doctors and patients. It should also help reduce pressure on out of hours services and accident and emergency.
"I would also strongly encourage patients to use services appropriately, so anyone with a cough or cold should use the pharmacy service first before trying to see a GP. These illnesses do tend to get better with self-care alone."
