Responding to Scottish Government plans published today (Tuesday) to provide significantly more routine outpatient appointments in community settings, Chair of BMA Scotland Dr Peter Bennie said:
"These proposals would mean a significant change to current practice for many routine out-patient appointments and we will engage fully with the Scottish Government on their implications.
"While there is broad political consensus around moves to provide more healthcare in community based settings, it is essential that this process does not simply move pressures from one part of the NHS to another.
"In particular, it would be entirely unsustainable if this process led to an increase in workload for already overburdened General Practice. Avoiding this must be a key priority in the development of these plans."
