Former BMA Wales secretary
LEWIS: Honours for family doctor

BMA Cymru Wales has congratulated its former secretary after he was named in the New Year’s Honours list.

Richard Lewis, who is the Welsh Government’s professional lead for primary care, was honoured with an MBE for services to healthcare in Wales.

He took up his current role, the first of its kind, in 2016 after 12 years with BMA Cymru Wales.

Dr Lewis qualified as a family doctor in 1987 and went to work in his home town of Maesteg, Bridgend.

In his early days he was a GP trainer and served as divisional surgeon and county surgeon for St John Ambulance.

Prior to his role with the BMA, Dr Lewis held a variety of positions within the Welsh NHS including stints as medical director of the Mid Glamorgan Family Health Services Authority in 1992 and part-time medical director of Mid Glamorgan Ambulance NHS Trust in 1995.
