MEDLINE is the U.S. National Library of Medicine® (NLM) premier bibliographic database that contains more than 22 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine.

As a BMA member, institutional member or BMA and BMJ staff member, you have access to this comprehensive resource through the BMA library.

  • Ordering articles via Medline

    References in MEDLINE Plus which indicate ’Held at BMA Library’ are available from our collection and the articles will be sent to you via email as a PDF attachment. We can supply items not in our stock by using our interlibrary service at a greater cost, please check our library prices.

    • Select (tick) each article from your search results
    • Return to the Main Search Page, scroll down to the Results Manager box and select the Order button.
    • Enter your personal details in the Document Ordering form (please check your membership number and email address are correct)
    • Select Continue and then choose how you want the articles to be delivered and what you would like to do about items we do not hold in stock
    • Down the page, the system will list the items for which you originally searched. You can deselect any article you don’t want
    • When satisfied, select the Order Items button
    • Please read the Copyright Declaration information and then select the I Accept button
    • A confirmation of your order will appear on the screen
    • You will be invoiced at the end of the month

    We offer services to help you with your research including free database searches on Medline Embase, PsycINFO, HMIC and the Cochrane library databases, and free assisted search sessions where you can plan your search strategy with the help of our clinical librarian.

    We offer an on-demand, by appointment only, one-to-one half day session to cover all the essentials of searching Medline, using the OvidSP interface.

    Our tutorials can also be tailored to your individual needs, so get in touch to find out what we can offer you.

    These bespoke tutorials are free for BMA members.

  • Terms and conditions

    Registering to use the MEDLINE Plus service is taken as acceptance of the following terms and conditions:

    • The MEDLINE Plus service is provided free of charge to members.
    • Only current members of the British Medical Association may use the MEDLINE Plus service
    • Users of the BMA website who have not renewed their BMA membership will have their login rights removed
    • The help desk is available between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. You can leave a voicemail message when the help is busy
    • At least 5 days notice will be given if the system needs to be closed down for any reason (eg global update, system software update, etc), unless emergency action is necessary
    • We welcome users publicising the service by writing for professional publications. A copy of any submission must be sent in advance to the BMA Library, for approval.
