E-books FAQs

The BMA Library is pleased to be able to offer access to over 1,900 e-books for BMA members. These books are all accessible on the library’s e-books page.

We regularly receive queries from BMA members about this service - read our most frequently asked questions.

If you have a query about our e-books collection which is not answered by any of the responses below please phone our Technical Services team on 020 7383 6564 or email [email protected].

Is there a limit on how many e-books I can download in a month?
No, there is no limit.

Is there a limit to how many times I can download the same e-book?
No, there is no limit. You can download a PDF/EPUB of each e-book for reading offline for 24 hours. After this time the PDF/EPUB file will no longer open, but you can log back into our e-books collection and download a new copy of the PDF/EPUB file.

Is there a limit on the number of BMA Members who can access the same e-book at the same time?
No, with the overwhelming majority of the titles in our e-books collection there is no 'concurrent user limit'. This means that you will never be prevented from accessing a title in our E-Books Collection due to the number of other BMA Members already currently accessing it. (With a very small minority of our e-books collection - less than 20 of the more than 1,900 titles - the publisher has imposed a concurrent user limit. With these titles, if you try to access them and they are already in use by another BMA member you will offered the option of adding yourself to 'the queue' for accessing it. This process involves providing a contact email address so that as soon as the current user is finished you will be sent a notification email to let you know that the e-book is now available for you to access it.)

Is there any way to download a PDF/EPUB of an e-book that will last for more than 24 hours?
No, there isn’t. In the same way that when you borrow a physical book from the Library you are not able to permanently keep it, when you download a Library e-book you cannot keep a permanent copy of it.

Can I download the e-books onto my iPad/iPhone?
It is possible to download PDFs/EPUBs of our e-books to read on an iPad or iPhone.

  • Please note that you will first need to download the Adobe Digital Editions app from the Apple App Store to your device.
  • Once you have downloaded this app, and open it for the first time you will be asked to enter your AdobeID.
If you don't already have one there is an option for you to create one.
  • Also, please note that there is a further, additional download link for downloading to an iPad or iPhone.
This appears at the bottom of the pop up box that you see after you have clicked on the main download link.

I have installed the Adobe Digital Editions app on my iPad/iPhone but keep seeing blank pages when I download your e-books. How do I fix this?
After downloading a PDF/EPUB of one of our e-books to your iPad or iPhone your device will automatically try to open it using the built-in PDF viewer in Safari, despite having the official Adobe Digital Editions app installed on your device. The pages appear blank because the PDF/EPUB files contains a component called DRM (Digital Rights Management), which the PDF viewer in Safari does not support.
Only the official Adobe apps support DRM.
Once you have the PDF/EPUB of one of our e-books open in Safari tap the middle of the screen and then tap on the 'More...' option that appears at the top of the screen. A list of apps will appear. Scroll through this list and tap on the ‘Copy to Adobe Digital Editions’ option.
The Adobe Digital Editions app will open, and will correctly display the content of the e-book.

Can I download the e-books onto my Android device?
It is possible to download PDFs/EPUBs of our e-books to read on an Android device.

  • Please note that you will first need to download the Adobe Digital Editions app from the Google Play store to your device.
  • Once you have downloaded this app, and open it for the first time you will be asked to enter your AdobeID.
If you don't already have one there is an option for you to create one.
  • Also, once you have the Adobe Digital Editions app downloaded you will need to set it as the preferred PDF/EPUB reading app on your device.

Can I download the e-books onto my Amazon Kindle?
At present you can only read our e-books on an Amazon Kindle using the ’Read online’ option. It is not possible to download PDFs/EPUBs of our e-books to read on a Kindle.

Can I access the e-books on my Apple Mac?
Yes, but we recommend you carry out the following steps:

  • Use the Firefox web browser, rather than Safari.
If you do not yet have Firefox installed on your Mac you can download it for free from www.getfirefox.com.
  • Use Adobe Digital Editions to view the downloaded PDFs/EPUBs of our E-Books.
Again, if you do not yet have this installed on your Mac it can be downloaded for free from:
    http://www.adobe.com/uk/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html.
  • Once you have both of these applications installed, use Firefox to download the PDF/EPUB of one of our E-Books to the hard drive or desktop of your Mac. Then open Adobe Digital Editions and use the ’Open’ facility in it to open the downloaded PDF/EPUB file.

The reason for doing the above is that Safari sometimes does not successfully handle the downloading of PDF/EPUB files from the internet, and opening a PDF/EPUB file on a Mac without first opening Adobe Digital Editions will result in the file being opened in an application called 'Preview', which comes preloaded on all Macs and which seems to only display one page of a PDF/EPUB file, or simply a blank page.
