The importance of communication to your work as a doctor is marked by its inclusion in the core pillars of Good Medical Practice (GMC, 2014). Effective communication reduces medical errors, improves patient satisfaction and contributes to your wellbeing.
Day-to-day work interactions rely on your ability to give and receive information in a way that is understood in the way it was intended. Whether your day involves patient consultations, collaboration with colleagues, presenting, teaching or more, there will be some scenarios where you feel more confident than in others.
This research-led practical day course revisits the essentials of communication with fresh perspective. We’ll show you how to thrive in the areas where you feel less confident. You’ll have opportunities to reflect, network and practise a variety of techniques.
What to expect on this course
This practical and interactive full-day course addresses the essentials of communication and explores our intercultural communications in depth. This is followed by smaller workshops exploring specific areas of communication where doctors may feel less confident, when delivering and receiving feedback; presenting and speaking with confidence; and building professional relationships. Our experienced team of trainers present a range of workshops that are research-led and highly interactive, encouraging you to reflect, network with other doctors, and explore and practise a variety of techniques on offer.

Effective communication - the essentials
In this opening workshop, we will strip back our communications to better understand the psychological and social factors at play, to appreciate the potential for errors and improvement.
We will cover:
- The dynamics within the different contexts of our communications;
- Explore enablers and barriers to deep and active listening; and
- Identify helpful and unhelpful verbal and non-verbal language.

Improving intercultural communication
We work and live in culturally diverse settings, from the patients we serve to the colleagues we work alongside. People from different backgrounds bring with them different perspectives and values to your own, and it is important to be aware and sensitive to these.
In this workshop, we will:
- explore what “culture” means;
- identify and share the cultural diversities you may come across; and
- share experiences and good practice to develop a more confident and culturally sensitive approach.

Building professional relationships
Developing effective relationships with other professionals is a life-long skill that can help you to be adaptive to change, fit into teams quickly, share best practice and ultimately improve the quality of patient safety. This workshop will provide you with an opportunity to improve how you form professional relationships and collaborate with others.

Giving and receiving feedback
Feedback is a two-way process and we all have our own natural style of providing feedback. Considering the different contexts in which feedback is given we will take a fresh look at how you deliver effective feedback.
Your ability to give and receive feedback is an art form to get right. It takes time to perfect and you never stops learning new approaches and techniques as you continue to master this communication skill. Conveying feedback in a positive, supportive and constructive manner will strengthen your working relationships and help you motivate others around you. Receiving feedback isn’t always easy to accept but having a proactive and responsive approach to it will help you.

||Introduction to negotiation
We will look at the most widely respected negotiation model (‘Principled Negotiation’ from Fisher and Ury) and identify the components needed for effective negotiation.
At the heart of this approach is aiming for win-win outcomes, showing care for both sides of the negotiation. We will then apply that learning to a practice situation and review what went well and what was challenging.
