The BMA has, for many years, been engaged in a number of cases of workplace bullying and harassment and it is clear that the culture in the workplace contributes greatly to some of the problems we come across.
Recently, we have seen a number of issues come to the fore within NHS Scotland employers, which has led to the BMA being in discussions with fellow unions, attending meetings with members and ensuring the BMA is represented in the ongoing dialogue with certain Health Boards.
Cultural change takes time. The opportunity to start the discussion is an important starting point for bringing about any necessary improvement. To help support doctors, the BMA is running this evening event to allow doctors from all branches of practice to share experiences, to support those affected and to provide an opportunity to discuss how best the workplace culture at University Hospital Wishaw could be improved.
Opening with a general discussion session will give those present the opportunity to share any issues they have experienced or been aware of, and will allow us to discuss a collective approach to how we can begin to change the culture for the better.
The session will end with some information from our expert advisers on our new half-day course, helping individuals to safely challenge unacceptable behaviours and to deal with the difficult conversations those behaviours generate.
