This one-day workshop gives an intensive overview of the skills needed and resources available for critical appraisal, and will provide ideas on how these can be used on return to the workplace.

What to expect from this workshop

At the end of the course you will:

  • Understand the importance and characteristics of critical appraisal
  • Be aware of a range of tools for assisting in critical appraisal in healthcare
  • Be aware of a range of products based upon critical appraisal in healthcare
  • Understand the basic steps involved in appraising a randomised controlled trial and have worked through an example as a group exercise
  • Understand the basic steps involved in appraising a systematic review and have worked through an example as a group exercise

Course leader

John Blenkinsopp, Critical Appraisal Trainer and Clinical Effectiveness Advisor, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust

John is a Clinical Effectiveness Advisor and trainer who has over 20 years experience of running courses in critical appraisal.

Originally a Medical Librarian, John has also run a number of critical appraisal courses for the London Deanery, Department of Health, Kings Fund, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Health Education England and a number of trusts and medical charities up and down the country.
