The first set of GP workforce statistics for 2018 have been published by NHS Digital, and no, before anyone asks, there is no good news. I wrote in December 2017 saying that we have fewer GPs than in 2012. And the numbers have dropped further.
For the first time since GP workforce statistics were publishes by the then Health and Social Care Information Centre, now NHS Digital, the number of full time equivalent GP partner numbers have dropped below 20,000.
The number for salaried GPs and locum GPs is relatively stable. What this means for the population of England is that an average GP contractor now has a patient list of over 2800. And it is not inconceivable that it will be over 3000 in the next few years if the current trends continue.
The promise of extra GPs from the government is not working out. GPs are still leaving the profession owing to years of over-regulation, underfunding and ever-increasing workload. Is there hope that this will change in the immediate future? I would say that there is an opportunity, but hope is far too distant.
The chief executive of Wessex LMCs, Nigel Watson, being independently appointed by the secretary of state for health and social care to chair the partnership review, is a positive step for the profession. The fact that it is a jobbing GP who had a breadth of experience of representing local GPs and GP practices gives us, the profession, the ownership of the potential solutions. And this is where I believe we will be able to influence what we want to see as the future of general practice workforce and the independent contractor model.
We at the GPC have already commenced our work on the partnership review; a review we hope will address some of the fundamental issues with the partnership model and work towards reinvigorating the model for the future of general practice.
I have said it before and will say it again - I would challenge anyone to come up with a model that is more responsive to patients’ needs, more efficient, provides more leadership and innovative opportunities, acts as patients’ advocates and delivers high quality care day in day out. All this while still providing the best care across all the sectors in the NHS (as recently been confirmed by none other than the CQC itself!).

When it comes to sports and brands, however, the joy in another's sorrow often has to be whipped up using inflammatory language. One study showed that the schadenfreude that was induced in one press statement completely disappeared when people were issued a press statement with more neutral language. (It's not surprising. "Smug X fans had the smiles wiped off their faces when their over-hyped team screwed up," evokes a very different emotion than, "X fans leave the stadium disappointed by last-minute loss.")

There might be gas - danger of blast or suffocation; power - the pool of water around the defective clothes washer might be live; discharge - opening a hot entryway might be the exact opposite thing you ought to do; ambush - the attacker with a blade or a weapon might be behind the entryway anticipating their next casualty or a prisoner; blood - stay away from pointless contact with natural liquids by wearing gloves and a face shield if accessible.
