When you visit any web site, it may store or retrieve information on your browser, mostly in the form of cookies. This information might be about you, your preferences or your device and is mostly used to make the site work as you expect it to. The information does not usually directly identify you, but it can give you a more personalised web experience.
Because we respect your right to privacy, you can choose not to allow some types of cookies. Click on the different category headings to find out more and change our default settings. However, blocking some types of cookies may impact your experience of the site and the services we are able to offer.
These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms.
You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.

These cookies allow us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information we collect is anonymous unless you actively provide personal information to us.
If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.
These cookies allow a website to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you're in) and tailor the website to provide enhanced features and content for you.
For example, they can be used to remember certain log-in details, changes you've made to text size, font and other parts of pages that you can customise. They may also be used to provide services you've asked for such as watching a video or commenting on a blog. These cookies may be used to ensure that all our services and communications are relevant to you. The information these cookies collect cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.
Without these cookies, a website cannot remember choices you've previously made or personalise your browsing experience meaning you would have to reset these for every visit. In addition, some functionality may not be available if this category is switched off.
Our websites sometimes integrate with other companies’ sites. For example, we integrate with social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, to make it easier for you to share what you have read. This month I wanted to remind you about the valuable work of the Cameron Fund, which supports general practitioners and their dependant family in times of financial crisis.
The reality is that we are just as likely to suffer from physical or mental ill health as our patients, and this could lead to serious financial worries. A sudden drop in income can have a devastating effect, especially if you have previously earned a good salary and have large financial commitments.
The fund helps many sessional GPs. Some of us may work limited sessions because of health issues or family commitments, which may mean struggling on a reduced income. We are also more likely to encounter problems relating to the uncertainty of self-employment, or the isolation that comes from not having the support of a practice.
Sometimes it's hard to admit to ourselves that we need help, but a confidential call would be the first step.
Last year, the fund authorised grants and loans to the value of £319,539 to 191 GPs and their dependants. This may be short-term help or over a longer period until someone is earning a sustainable income.
I would like to ask you if you could spread the word about the fund’s existence to your colleagues, especially if you are aware of someone who may be in financial difficulty.
Unfortunately, the last couple of years, the fund has seen a drop in income, while the need for support has increased. Around half of the fund’s income comes from continued investment of the original ‘fund’; however, the remainder is via donations from the profession itself.
We would like to show our support with a regular source of income from sessional GPs. Will you help us?
You can give a donation (quoting ‘sessional GP’) at www.cameronfund.org.uk

The Cameron Fund helps those doctors who cannot help themselves. It's akin to an umbrella; no one can predict a rain storm in life. Zoe is right to support it so effectively and other colleagues through it. I am an ardent supporter of the BMA since 1964; indeed, the BMA helps all doctors as being a unique trade union. I am glad to note that BMA Officers are negotiating now with the elected British Government in privacy, out of sight of media. Every British citizen is a potential or real patient; we need to help each other with mutual respect. The Cameron Fund also helps the BMA members in privacy, out of publicity in media. A friend in need is a friend indeed. I meet the Cameron Fund volunteers at BMA and LMC conferences. They are excellent and sincere people. With members' help they help other members. Keep up the good work with a smile. Bashir Qureshi FRCGP, FRCPCH, AFOM-RCP, MICGP, Hon FFSRH-RCOG, Hon FRSH, Hon FRSPH, Hon MAPHA-USA.
