I remember the excitement I had applying to medical school, the giddy feeling I had when I was accepted and the sheer optimism I had when I qualified, and I was not alone. Every single one of us felt like this.
At the LMCs conference, Tom Micklewright, the GPC GP trainees subcommittee chair has spoken about the workforce crisis we are experiencing, and the low morale within the profession.
So where has the energy, enthusiasm and optimism gone?
It has been beaten out of us by the failing system we find ourselves propping up.
A newly qualified doctor was the brightest in their school, gained amazing grades and then studied hard for a further five years to stand before you as an F1. They are the top few percent of graduates in the country and they are treated inhumanely. Feeling and being under-valued continues as they progress though their careers.
Doctors do not get their rotas in a timely manner and so, cannot plan their lives more than four months at a time. They might be placed on to fixed leave so miss their friend’s social event, birth of their child or even their own wedding.
They are not allowed to go to clinic to learn skills vital to improve their skills or go on study leave to attend courses that will help them save lives. They have to fund their own courses, whilst using their annual leave to attend. It is little wonder then that the recent BMA survey found that one in five want a career break and of these 50 per cent need it for mental health and well-being. These are results of doctors who have only worked for two years in the NHS.
Junior doctors are leaving training jobs to go to Australia, Canada and New Zealand because they actually want to get trained. GP trainees get less than a day’s notice to attend out-of-hours shifts and after rearranging their childcare, have to return from this shift, grab a few hours’ sleep and then go back to their regular day job in general practice.
Capita has messed up and not paid GP trainees but it has not received any penalties but the poor doctor who has missed their mortgage payment certainly has.
Doctors have not gone into medicine for the money but for the vocation, for wanting to improve the lives of others and to be in the privileged position of being trusted with your parents’, siblings’ or children’s lives.
We want to help, to be compassionate and care. This was seen over the recent blast from the Beast from the East, with all healthcare professionals fighting though red weather warnings to get to work, not knowing if they would be able to make it home that evening. Some slept in the hospital or worked double shifts to cover for colleagues stuck in the snow drifts.
The GP trainees subcommittee stands up and fights for the injustices and problems facing our members every day. We simply want fair and just treatment, but the system is under pressure, understaffed and underfunded. By not investing in junior doctors today by valuing and actually training them, we will not have GPs and consultants tomorrow to look after our loved ones.
Let us work together and fundamentally change training, to make it fit for the modern 21st century NHS. Listen to the trainee voice in LMCs and boardrooms and above all ensure that trainees are made to feel like humans and not simply a name on a rota.
Sandesh Gulhane is the GPC GP trainees subcommittee Scotland lead
Firstly i want to state that this is my own opinion not anyone elses. The most impact full provision in my line of work is the 96 hours breach notification requirement: when a breach of customer data happens, you have 72 hours to report it. That is really fast. Hackers won't inform you that they have broken into your security system and are about to steal your belongings. It can take weeks or months to figure out exactly what they did, and in particular, which customers are affected and in what way. This is why you often see a essay writing service company make an initial breach disclosing that some accounts named X,y and Z were affected, then later the company changes the number of accounts to A,B and C. It's unclear how the industry and regulators will deal with the uncertainties of a real life breach investigation.

Essay Help UK learners get not as much as a day's notice to go to out of hours shifts and in the wake of reworking their childcare, need to come back from this move, get a couple of hours' rest and after that backpedal to their customary day work when all is said in done practice.
