A course designed for 16 and 17year old school students from a working-class background to provide them with a hands-on experience of clinical skills and patient care. Along the way, they will be guided by senior medical and nursing students an as they become more familiar with a selection of clinical presentations and the ABCDE approach. Utilising their new skills in emergency clinical scenarios will enable them to grow in confidence as they become familiar with the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach.
The selection process is tough as it is. There are a several courses that charge to provide an expensive experience with promises that can’t be kept often leaving some wishing. As a medical student, I gained so much from clinical simulation teaching, and realised that this could be a very effective way of introducing our delegates to life on the healthcare front line. After gaining full support and funding from Leicester University and its Medical School, doors have opened to widen participation in the local area by providing a free course for our next generation of professionals.
The 2-day course uses a variety of medical education techniques to suit a variety or learning needs.
Day 1 – A series of lectures focussing on basic pathology and physiology. Workshops introduce the “ABCDE” approach, allowing delegates to apply structure to basic clinical assessment.
Day 2 – Emergency scenarios introduces students to a variety of presentations and equipment, allowing them to practice in a pressure-free environment. Seminars led by doctors focus on interactive cases to help develop essential communication skills.
Handbooks are provided to enhance the learning experience and a medical student assigned to each group helps to guide and advise.
JEM has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all that have attended. Not only from the school students but the medical students enjoy teaching and supporting each other, learning skills relevant to their exams and the student nurses love the practice of inter-professional teamwork. With such fantastic results and a model proven to work JEM will debut at the University of Nottingham this September on top of returning for the 3rd time at the University of Leicester and De Montfort University
I love being a doctor, and it saddens me to see that applications for medical degrees and decreased. I see fellow professionals leaving the NHS in search of pastures new, but I also work alongside professionals who love their jobs with a passion. The JEM course aims to inspire young people and provide novel learning opportunities, free of charge. It is the aim with JEM to give people a taster to inspire to pursue a great career. I’m currently working on expanding even further with JEM.
