Specialty doctors will be recognised for acting up in the role of consultants, following successful BMA negotiations.
NHS Employers has agreed that specialty doctors should be paid an ‘acting-up’ allowance if they take over the full range of duties and responsibilities of consultants without supervision.
This would raise their rate of pay to the level they would receive if they were promoted to the consultant grade.
The changes will be included in the specialty doctor terms and conditions of service, replicating provisions already set out for associate specialists.
BMA staff, associate specialists and specialty doctors committee co-chair Amit Kochhar welcomed the news and said it was crucial to recognise acting-up work with adequate and standardised allowances.
He argued: ‘SAS doctors are expected to take on extra responsibilities throughout their careers and many already work on consultant rotas or provide cover for senior colleagues.
‘Including this new section into the terms and conditions of service for specialty doctors clears up misunderstandings over whether they can act up as consultants and clarifies how this should be rewarded.’
Payment would be made when a consultant was absent for more than two weeks other than on the annual or professional leave recommended for their grade and arrangements cannot be made.
The terms and conditions maintain that doctors should not act up to this level for a continuous period of more than six months. NHS Employers has yet to confirm when the changes will be implemented and the SASC will keep doctors updated on any progress.

We haven't yet received a timeline for implementation from NHS Employers but we would expect this change to be circulated within the next month or so in England.
