When you visit any web site, it may store or retrieve information on your browser, mostly in the form of cookies. This information might be about you, your preferences or your device and is mostly used to make the site work as you expect it to. Are you a first year Cardiff University medical student or in your third year at Swansea University Medical School? BMA Cymru Wales is looking for representatives to sit on its Welsh Medical Students Committee.
The BMA’s Welsh Medical Students Committee (WMSC) represents all students studying for a medical degree in Wales. It meets regularly to discuss important issues that have a direct impact on medical students, particularly those relating to education, welfare and finance. The WMSC makes representations to the Welsh Government, Medical Schools, Local Health Boards and where relevant, the Postgraduate Deanery. In addition, the WMSC has an extremely important role in actively contributing to the work of the UK Medical Students Committee, ensuring that the views of medical students in Wales are represented. The WMSC also works in co-operation with other Committees that represent various branches of practice of the medical profession in Wales.
Nominations to the WMSC are currently being sought
The WMSC is made up of two medical students elected from every year at both Cardiff and Swansea medical schools as well as an intercalating representative. We’re still looking for:
1 x first year Cardiff University medical student
1 x second year Swansea University medical student; and
2 x third year Swansea University medical students.
The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 4th October 2017 at 5.00pm
To be eligible to stand as a WMSC representative you need to be a student member of the BMA, or in the process of joining the BMA. It is important that you are in regular contact with fellow students and are able to voice their concerns and keep them informed throughout the year. You should also be committed to the requirements of your course and your medical school during the year you hold office.
Role of WMSC members
The main role of Committee members is to ensure good communication between the WMSC and the medical students that it represents. This is a two-way process that allows medical student opinion to reach the WMSC and ensures that medical students from the grassroots are involved in its lobbying, surveys and activities - all of which aim to improve the situation of medical students. Being involved with the WMSC requires a commitment to represent the views of your fellow students as Committee members act on issues that have a direct impact on students in Wales.
