The results of the 2018 GMC National Training Survey are damning, concerning and mirror the experiences that we know junior doctors in Wales encounter daily.
The results are even more stark when taking into account the statistics from the parallel GMC trainers survey. Junior doctors cannot develop or evidence their training progression without trainers having the time to engage and invest in their junior doctors training. We cannot train in isolation.
I recognise that considerable efforts have been undertaken to address some elements which factor into junior doctor training conditions and wellbeing, and acknowledge that positive change takes time to come to fruition, but these survey results demonstrate that we need to build impetus, breadth and action.
Following the release of the 2018 NTS results, I, alongside WJDC will be working closely with General Medical Council Wales, Health Education and Improvement Wales and Wales Deanery to discuss the data we now have, to ensure that constructive, realistic and well conceived action points and plans are compiled that address the concerns you have voiced so clearly to us.
We have recently highlighted the concerns you have regarding rota gaps, training and wellbeing via the 2016 junior doctors survey and 2018 rota gaps survey during a summit hosted by BMA Cymru Wales which has resulted in an agreement between BMA Cymru Wales, Welsh Government and the Welsh NHS Confederation to develop a Fatigue and Facilities Charter – the first UK country to do so. We will be working hard to ensure this agreement results in demonstrably improved working and training conditions for junior doctors in Wales.
I will be attending meetings with GMC, HEIW and WD in the coming two weeks to discuss the NTS results, and the state of junior doctor working and training conditions in Wales. It is clear we are all challenged by the systems we are working in, and that action is needed now.
I would like to thank all of my junior doctor colleagues in Wales for taking the considerable amount of time out of their busy schedules to participate in a valuable and honest way to the NTS this year. Together, as one profession, we can enact positive change - for our training, our wellbeing and our patients.
