Rota design and planning is a very difficult task to undertake. At the Junior Doctor Conference on Saturday 14th May I put forward a motion, which was passed unanimously, to encourage more junior doctors to get involved in this process. The motion stated that a junior doctor should be appointed from each department to be actively involved in rota design and planning.
I’m sure that you can all recall a time where you received the rota at short notice, making it very difficult to plan your lives and training. I myself have experienced this – being rostered for nights whilst I was supposed to be simultaneously in India, despite six months’ notice. I have a friend who, despite giving a year’s notice, was surprised to find out she was on-call on her wedding day.
So why have a junior doctor involved in rota planning? A doctor’s rota that is designed by doctors will be much more user friendly, will help improve morale and will allow us to take more control and responsibility over our training opportunities. Junior doctors are already undertaking this role in many specialties and from discussion with colleagues, where this is happening, it seems to be working well.
There is also a benefit to the junior doctor involved in the design and planning of rotas. The acquisition of managerial and organisational skills as junior doctors are essential, no matter what career path we choose in medicine. This responsibility needs to be a recognised role.
Our rotas are currently being designed and planned in the majority by administrative staff that are employed to carry out this role. It’s inevitable that this frequently results in inflexible rotas that they themselves have never worked.
Those junior doctors already involved in rota design and planning, may have to undertake this in their spare time. Junior doctors in this role need allocated time away from clinical commitments to carry out this difficult task.
Each individual trainee has different needs and aims they wish to achieve in their rotations. A junior doctor taking up this role will have a much better understanding of individual training needs and will be more equipped to ensure that these are achieved. Hopefully this means you will no longer be rostered to work on your wedding day.
