No doubt many of you will be asking ‘what will happen in Wales?’ now that Jeremy Hunt has announced a state backed indemnity solution for English GPs.
GPC Wales and RCGP Wales have been lobbying hard to ensure that a sustainable solution is found for GPs in Wales. Welsh Government have listened and understood the problems that rising indemnity is having on the GP workforce, and has today, publicly confirmed that GPs in Wales will not be disadvantaged by this announcement.
Like England, the provider for indemnity has yet to be formally determined but the solution will have state backing. You will know that the Treasury have put aside £5.9 billion for the NHS across the UK to cushion the impact of the discount rate changes which is causing indemnity fees to increase significantly.
Welsh Government have commissioned an independent review to assess all options which is due to report shortly. We are confident that this review will ensure that the right solution will be found, and unintended consequences or potential risk of challenge to the eventual provider will be minimized.
Welsh Government together with Welsh Risk Pool experts and GPC Wales will continue to work closely in ensuring the profession receives the right solution with a timeline that mirrors the changes in England.
The total funding required for this will be dependent on a number of factors and, like England, any negotiation on contributions from the profession will go through the usual Welsh negotiation process. For now, there is no change to the current indemnity provision and support system:
We'll keep you fully up to speed as this important area develops.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your LMC or GPC Wales.
please give us some feedback/pointers on the MDU unilateral plans - no one is helping us with this at all. MDU unilateral plan - take it or leave it, not the same offer for the cut price, as yet unconfirmed government money, and MPS/MDDUS continuing just the same - because money unconfirmed.
would be really nice to have some in put on this? thanks
This page was posted SIX MONTHS ago. Since then GPs in England have had their MDU fee halved so I am already £3000 worse off as a GP in Wales. When are we going to see some progress in Wales?
