Over the course of this year, the Welsh SAS doctors committee has continued to actively promote the implementation of the Welsh SAS charter, which aims to improve the working conditions for SAS doctors in all health boards across Wales. All health boards in Wales have now completed initial assessments of their implementation of the Charter using our SAS Charter implementation toolkit and submitted their results to the committee. WSASC has now set up a SAS Charter implementation sub-group to analyse and act upon these results. We have also recently undertaken a media campaign, promoting the excellent work of Welsh SAS doctors, along with highlighting their concerns. I’m especially pleased to share with you that in 2020, the committee will enter into contract reform negotiations with the UK and Welsh Governments on both the specialty doctor and associate specialist contracts for England and Wales. This will include discussions on the re-opening of the associate specialist grade which has been closed to new entrants since 2008. I look forward to giving you a more detailed update on contract reform in the new year.
