Sufficient progress. Those two words may determine the UK’s future relationship with Europe but are as ambiguous as asking ’how long is a piece of string?’
They relate to this week’s meeting of the European Council, where the leaders of the EU 27 will decide whether ‘sufficient progress’ has been made to allow Brexit negotiations to proceed into discussion of a possible transitional period and on the framework for the future relationship between the EU and UK.
David Davis, who having promised the ‘row of the summer’, over the EU’s demands for this phased approach to talks, caved almost immediately and acceded to Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator’s, opening gambit.
Barring something extraordinary – for example, Theresa May offering to unconditionally honour the EU’s calculation of the UK’s financial commitments – happening in the next 24 hours, the message may well be clear and echo earlier European assessments:
Whilst there’s widespread recognition – the BMA has met with political representatives from 22 of the 27 EU member states - that progress has been made on the ongoing mutual recognition of medical qualifications, there is also a genuine consensus that ‘sufficient progress’ will not be reached until the UK government drastically alters its approach to settling its financial obligations.
Worryingly, such brinkmanship, increases the likelihood that the UK will exit the EU in March 2019 without a withdrawal agreement.
As a recent Lancet article - How will Brexit affect health and health services in the UK? Evaluating three possible scenarios – outlines, this is the worst possible outcome for the UK’s health system:
‘First, the effects of Brexit are wide ranging, touching every building block of a health system as described in the WHO Health System Framework. Second, these effects on health range from somewhat negative to very negative, with few opportunities. Third, the effects depend on what type of Brexit is pursued; the harder the Brexit, the worse the effects, with no deal being the worst of all.’
The potential impact of Brexit upon our profession and the patients we serve frightens me.
It frightens our European colleagues too.
The NHS simply will not be able to cope; without for example;
Despite the vast range of sectoral interests competing for the prioritisation of their interests, the BMA’s work with European partners has secured recognition of our joint concerns at the highest levels of the EU, to quote two examples;
As Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel and the other leaders prepare to decide on whether ‘sufficient progress’ has been made, the BMA has published a range of briefings which explain the importance of maintaining an effective working relationship between the UK and the EU.
Brexit has been described as a ‘monumental act of self-harm.’ These briefings show that the medical profession didn’t inflict this wound, but will be integral to treating the patient and ensuring that the long term damage is minimised.

What are bma representatives doing in Brussels? Why are my membership dees paying for your holidays? How much has this all cost?
Freedom of information request time.
Scrolling down, why the BMA feels a need to release a statement on "modern slavery" directly beneath a link to company information is also alarming. What the sugar is going on at the BMA?
I appreciate the sincere comments that Andrew Dearden, BMA Treasurer has made, so tactfully. I support the BMA's concerns as the BMA is the only recognised Trade Union of all British doctors. The BMA delegates' visit to Brussels was timely and the issues concerning Medical person-power are real and these should be discussed with the British Government and the EU Authorities; well done. I sincerely suggest that; 1) The BMA should not label itself as "Apolitical". It should rename itself as a " Medical Politics Trade Union". 2) Politics is a science dealing with realities; not dealing with fiction. Let us support both the Academics and Politicians and face realities, with a positive appraoch, as we need both. 3) Criticism is a positive activity in Science and Politics. Even a negative criticism can result in a positive action. Keep up the good work with a usual smile. Dr Bashir Qureshi FRCGP, FRCPCH, AFOM-RCP, MICGP, Hon FFSRH-RCOG, Hon FRSPH, Hon MAPHA-USA. Since its choice, the Government has drafted the Nuclear Safeguards charge, which tries to make household administrative structure that will enable the UK to keep on meeting its universal commitments on atomic shields.
Setting up the vital enactment and shielding examiners before the UK leaves the EU one year from now be that as it may, will turn out to be a huge assignment. https://terrariumtv.ooo/
The UK would need to reproduce everything in the Euratom protections and investigation so as to be consistent with the IAEA. Inability to do as such would mean adequately turning into a resistant atomic state.
This will cost cash and time assets which could be
