The BMA briefed MPs ahead of initial Commons and Lords stages of the Higher Education and Research Bill.
The BMA is campaigning for amendments to the Bill to address member concerns including, competition between higher education providers, ensuring academic freedom and the danger of linking tuition fees to the Teaching Excellence Framework.
The BMA does not believe that focusing on creating competition between higher education providers will ensure that the best education is provided to medical students or effectively promote medical research. We believe that the Bill should make more provision to encourage co-operation between institutions and academics, to widening access to courses and to ensuring academic freedom is retained.
