Doctors must feel able to report errors and reflect on mistakes openly, says BMA
Responding to the Health Secretary's announcement of a number of patient safety measures and recommendations from Professor Sir Norman Williams' review on gross negligence manslaughter1, Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA council chair said: "As we have seen with recent cases, when mistakes occur in the medical environment, the outcome can be tragic in leading to an unexpected death, with extreme distress both for grieving families who have lost loved ones and to doctors and other healthcare professionals who may lose their career as a result."

Dr Nagpaul was interviewed by BBC News and a clip was used in news bulletins across the BBC network, including BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4 and commercial radio network Global Radio.
BMA medico-legal chair Dr Jan Wise was also interviewed by a selection of BBC local radio stations. His comments and the BMA's stance were featured in news coverage in The Guardian, Mail Online, Press Association, ITV News Online, BBC News Online, Pulse, The Sun and The Times' leader column.
