End Water Poverty

End Water Poverty is an international campaign, driven by a growing coalition of organisations, calling for immediate action to address the global crisis in water and sanitation.

Call to tackle sanitation crisis killing children

The BMA is among international health and development experts highlighting the sanitation crisis that has cost 10 million children their lives since 2000.

In an open letter to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon, BMA president Baroness Ilora Finlay and 35 other signatories point out that one in three children does not have access to a basic toilet, which contributes to the world's three main killers of children: undernutrition, pneumonia and diarrhoea.

The letter was coordinated by international-development organisation WaterAid to coincide with World Toilet Day on 19 November 2014.

The health impact of this crisis is devastating

Currently, 884 million people live without safe water and 2.6 billion people live without access to sanitation.

Of these people, around 5000 children die every day from water-related diseases - the equivalent of 20 airliners filled with children, lost on a daily basis to an entirely preventable public health crisis.

We have joined the campaign, which is calling for a Global Framework for Action on sanitation and water, 70% of aid money for sanitation and water to be targeted at the poorest countries, and water resources to be protected and shared equitably.

We have lobbied world leaders to take decisive action but there is still a lack of political will needed to push through changes that will benefit the poorest and most vulnerable people.

Help us to tackle this global crisis - join End Water Poverty now.
