About our committee

The NIMSC is a standing committee of the BMA and represents all medical students in Northern Ireland. Its remit is to consider and act in matters affecting those studying medicine.

The NIMSC also liaises closely with the Northern Ireland Junior Doctors' Committee (NIJDC) and the NIMSC chair attends the NIJDC meetings to advise on the issues of concern to medical students and to update the committee on the work of NIMSC.

Our current priorities

Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (PALS) – NIMSC continues to promote a new initiative introduced last year, which is aimed at enhancing the support given to students in all year groups through an online peer-peer support scheme.

Widening Participation – Following on from the success of the 2016 ARM Schools event, NIMSC is holding a Widening Participation event on 10 October 2017 at Riddel Hall, which will promote medicine as a career with the focus on those students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Student Finance – NIMSC will continue to work to abolish tuition fees in Northern Ireland, in line with the BMA NI manifesto, through various means including lobbying MLAs, working with other organisations etc.

New medical school in NI – NIMSC will continue to keep members informed of progress in regards to the new medical school at University of Ulster.

Medical workforce planning – Along with the other NI branches of practice, NIMSC will continue to influence DoH to produce a comprehensive and effective medical workforce plan.

Political influence - Politically influence through ongoing contact with MLAs, attendance at and input to political party conferences and assembly business based around the BMA NI priorities.

We want to hear from you – Join us for one of our meetings around the country or tell us what you think NIMSC's priorities should be by emailing our chair.
