Responding to the announcement from the Armed Forces Pay Review Body’s 50th report, the BMA says that the recommendations amount to a real-terms pay cut for the doctors and dentists from the armed forces. The report proposes a pay freeze for those earning over £24,000 which, paired with increased charges for accommodation and the current rate of inflation, means that armed forces doctors and dentists will effectively be given a pay cut.

The BMA and the British Dental Association have published a joint statement.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA chair of council said: “Like their NHS colleagues, these doctors and dentists who have contributed so much during the pandemic have effectively been given a pay cut which is extremely disappointing. Our members will essentially have paid out of their own pockets for the role they have played in the pandemic. The BMA was disappointed with the insufficient 3% pay award applied to civilian doctors in the NHS, so this kick in the teeth to armed forces doctors is demeaning their efforts.

“Uniformed doctors and dentists often serve side-by-side with doctors in NHS settings, or else work equally as hard in Defence Primary Healthcare and single service medical units, yet they have been denied parity with their civilian colleagues. They have led the acceleration of the national vaccination programme and have played a crucial role in the establishment of the Nightingale Hospitals both at home and overseas, yet it appears their efforts have been dismissed by this pay cut.

“We engaged with the pay review process in good faith; we leave it feeling our evidence has been ignored.”
