Speaking in response to the Executive’s announcement today (Wednesday, 22 December 2021) on further restrictions, BMA’s Northern Ireland Council chair Tom Black said: “These further measures are welcome and we hope they will help mitigate some of the worst affects of the spread of Covid along with the already obvious majority public adherence to social distancing advice. We know it is disappointing and hard for us to all face more restrictions, but we must do something now to slow the spread of Omicron and protect the public.

“There is a real risk that as this new variant rapidly spreads that we will see an already exhausted and demoralised workforce under even more pressure as they cover for colleagues who are sick or isolating. Any sustained increase in admissions will put the health service under immense strain and we cannot risk there being insufficient staff to meet patient needs.

“We would urge everyone to limit their contacts over the next few days, follow the guidance on social distancing, mask wearing and ventilation and if you can, get a booster.”
