Commenting on the new Consultant Connect app, Dr Phil White, Chair of the BMA’s Welsh GP Committee, said:

“We welcome the introduction of the Consultant Connect app which will help doctors and other healthcare professionals provide the best possible diagnoses and help to their patients.

“Being able to access additional support and information will help cut out unnecessary hospital visits for some patients while it could also help with making swifter referrals for those that may need to visit a hospital.

“GPs have already developed new ways of working due to Covid-19 with all practices now seeing patients via video calls and telephone appointments and while the app was already in the pipeline, Welsh Government’s decision to fast-track its release during the pandemic is to be applauded.”

Meanwhile, Dr Phil Banfield who chairs the BMA’s Welsh Consultants Committee added:

“Emergency Departments and hospitals were under huge pressure even before Covid-19.

“While we do not yet know how big an effect the app will have in practice, if it can prevent unnecessary admissions it will be beneficial to the health of patients and it may also contribute in a small way to reducing the stress that hospitals and their staff are experiencing.

“Improving communication between GPs and specialists has long been an ambition of us all - it works in both directions. This will still need time set aside to undertake this work, but any measure that promises to facilitate better access to clinical opinions is to be welcomed.”
