Dr Phil White, Chair BMA’s General Practitioners Committee, said:

“We fully welcome Welsh Government’s announcement on the national roll-out of video health consultations, in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Whilst in usual circumstances, face-to-face consultations can be invaluable in order to fully assess a patient, we find ourselves in an unusual situation. General practice is under intense strain and Covid-19 could push it to its brink. The web-based service will ensure those who are self-isolating can access face-to-face care and ensure doctors can continue to offer patient care and not be struck down themselves.

“Many patients will not have internet access and alternative solutions will need to be offered, however, on the whole, the introduction of this service will help ease the pressures an influx in cases will bring. We hope to see this service rolling out quickly to GP surgeries across Wales.”
