There is a range of organisations, services and websites which can offer help, whether you are struggling with addiction or looking for legal advice, find signposts to support in the list of links below.

  • Addiction

    Addaction

    A major national drug and alcohol treatment charity in the United Kingdom.

    Alcohol Concern

    A national charity working to help reduce the problems that can be caused by alcohol.

    Alcoholics Anonymous

    A fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

    British Doctors and Dentists Group

    A service for recovering alcoholic and drug dependent doctors, dentists and students.

    FRANK

    Provides helpful, confidential drugs advice.

    Gamblers Anonymous

    A fellowship of men and women who have joined together to do something about their own gambling problem and to help other compulsive gamblers do the same. 

    GamCare

    Provides support, information and advice to anyone suffering through a gambling problem. Open 8am-2am 7 days a week. 

    Narcotics Anonymous

    A non-profit, international, community based organisation for recovering addicts that's active in over 60 countries. NA members learn from one another how to live drug free and recover from the effects of addiction in their lives. 

    Release

    Offers a range of specialist services to professionals and the public concerning drugs and the law. It provides advice to drug users, their families, friends, and statutory and voluntary agencies. Advice is free, professional, non-judgmental and confidential. 

    Sick Doctors Trust

    Support and help for doctors, dentists and medical students who are concerned about their use of alcohol and other drugs.

  • Bereavement

    Cruse Bereavement Care

    A national charity for bereaved people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Support, advice and information to adults, children and young people and when someone dies. 

    Dealing with grief and loss

    A useful NHS guide to coping with grief and loss.

    Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide

    Helpline, support groups and information for those bereaved by suicide.

  • Counselling and support

    BMA wellbeing support services

    Confidential, 24/7 telephone counselling and peer support. Free of charge to all doctors and medical students.

    Breathing Space

    A free, confidential, phone service for anyone in Scotland experiencing low mood, depression or anxiety.

    British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

    Search for counsellors and psychotherapists in your area.

    Carers UK

    Advice, information and support for carers throughout the UK.

    DocHealth

    A new, confidential, not for profit, psychotherapeutic consultation service for all doctors.

    Health For Health Professionals Wales

    A face to face counselling service for all doctors in Wales. It provides doctors with access to a BABCP accredited therapist in their area.

    Nottinghamshire Pastoral Support

    Made up of a number of experienced advisors, who are mostly retired GPs, available and trained to provide personal and confidential support to any local GP undergoing any kind of personal difficulty or crisis. 

    Nightline

    Confidential listening, support and practical information service for students. Open from 6pm to 8am every night of term. 

    Samaritans

    Available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

    Victim Support

    An independent charity and helpline if you've been a victim of any crime or have been affected by a crime committed against someone you know. Free and available to everyone.

    Action on Hearing Loss

    National charity helping people who are confronting life-changing deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss.

    UK Health Professionals with Hearing Loss

    A network of deaf and hard of hearing health professionals who share information and support.

    Association of Disabled Professionals

    Draws on the expertise of disabled professionals to improve the educational and employment opportunities of disabled people.

    British Dyslexia Association

    The voice of dyslexic people whose vision is that of a dyslexia friendly society that enables dyslexic people to reach their potential.

    Deaf Professionals Network

    Provides an opportunity to network to share experiences. The website is primarily for deaf professionals who live in and around London. This website can also be used as a resource for other deaf professionals who cannot attend the network meetings.

    Disabled Living Foundation Helpline

    A national charity providing free, impartial advice about all types of disability equipment and mobility products for older and disabled people, their carers and families.

    Hope 4 Disabled Doctors

    A support group for doctors with disabilities.

    Mencap

    Learning Disability Helpline offering advice and support for people with a learning disability, and their families and carers.

    RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind)

    Supports blind and partially sighted people.

    Wales Council for the Blind

    Promotes the welfare of blind and partially sighted people and the prevention of blindness. WCB is the umbrella body for visual impairment in Wales. It is an independent organisation for Wales.

    Disability Discrimination Act

    The legislation that is in place to promote civil rights for disabled people and protect disabled people from discrimination.

    Equality and Human Rights Commission

    Champions equality and human rights for all, working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.

    Equality Act

    Information and guidance on the Equality Act 2010, including age discrimination and public sector Equality Duty.

    GLADD

    Association of LGBT Doctors and Dentists. Offers help/support/ advice or simply the opportunity to make social contact with other lesbian, gay, bisecual or transgender doctors and dentists. 

     

  • Finances

    BMA Charities

    A group of charities established to help all doctors and their families in times of need.  

    The Cameron Fund 

    A charity for doctors who are, or have been, general practitioners, and for their dependants. It offers help in times of poverty, hardship or distress. The Fund aims to meet the needs of its beneficiaries in the fullest and most practical ways possible.

    The Money Advice Service

    Free and impartial money advice, set up by the Government. The site provides advice and guides to help improve your finances, tools and calculators to help you keep track and plan ahead and support over the phone and online.

    Royal Medical Benevolent Fund (RMBF)

    UK charity for doctors, medical students and their families. Provide financial support, money advice and information when needed due to age, ill health, disability and bereavement. 

    Royal Medical Foundation 

    A medical benevolent charity which assists UK medical practitioners and their dependants who find themselves in financial hardship.

  • Legal issues

    Advocate

    A charity which helps to find pro bono (free) legal assistance from volunteer barristers.

    BMA Law

    Independent, proactive legal advice for BMA members.

    Citizens Advice Bureau

    Give free, confidential, impartial and independent advice on a limitless range of subjects, including debt, benefits, housing, legal matters, employment, immigration and consumer issues. Bureaux are open to everyone regardless of race, gender, sexuality or disability.

    Medical Defence Union (for MDU members only)

    Provides expert help and advice on medico-legal and ethical matters including handling complaints, claims and GMC cases. It is staffed by a team of medico-legal advisers.

    Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (for MDDUS members only)

    Supports members with complaints made by patients against them or who are facing disciplinary matters from their employing trust. A highly qualified team of medical and dental professionals gives advice and guidance.

    Medical Practitioners Tribunal service

    Information and support for doctors who have a hearing as part of a GMC investigation.

    Medical Protection Society (for MPS members only)

    Provides comprehensive professional indemnity and expert advice to doctors, dentists and health professionals around the world.

    Release

    Offers a range of specialist services to professionals and the public concerning drugs and the law. It provides advice to drug users, their families, friends, and statutory and voluntary agencies. Advice is free, professional, non-judgmental and confidential.

    Anxiety UK

    UK charity aiming to promote the relief and rehabilitation of people suffering with anxiety disorders through information and provision of self-help services

    Beat

    UK charity for people with eating disorders and their families.

    Bipolar UK

    National charity dedicated to supporting individuals with the condition of bipolar, their families and carers.

    DocHealth

    A new, confidential, not for profit, psychotherapeutic consultation service for all doctors.

    Doctors' Support Network (DSN)

    A fully confidential, friendly, self-help group for doctors with mental health concerns.

    NHS GP Health service

    The NHS GP Health Service is a confidential NHS service for GPs and GP trainees in England, specialising in mental health support.

    The Mental Health Foundation

    Provides the latest news and events on mental health issues, as well as information on problems, treatments and strategies for living with mental distress.

    MIND

    Charity providing advice and support to anyone experiencing a mental health problem.

    NHS Practitioner Health Programme

    A free, confidential service for doctors and dentists who have mental or physical health concerns and or addiction problems, in particular where this may be affecting work. The service covers all doctors and dentists in the London area.

    SANE

    Offers practical information, crisis care and emotional support to anybody affected by mental health problems.

    Men's Advice Line

    Advice and support for men experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

    National Family Mediation 

    A network of local not-for-profit Family Mediation Services in England and Wales offering help to couples, married or unmarried, who are in the process of separation and divorce.

    Refuge

    Charity for women and children suffering domestic abuse. Freephone, 24 hour helpline. 

    Relate

    The UK's largest and most experienced relationship counselling organisation helping people to work through their relationship difficulties and reach their own decisions about the best way forward.

    Women's Aid

    A national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children; supporting a network of over 500 domestic and sexual violence services across the UK.

  • Royal Colleges

    Association of Anaesthetists - Wellbeing and support

    Information and guidance on your wellbeing from the Association of Anaesthetists.

    Confidential Support and Advice for Surgeons 

    Telephone helpline from the Royal College of Surgeons which provides a point of personal contact between surgeons, where they can discuss issues of concern with a professional colleague or peer. Besides offering a listening ear, the helpline acts as an informed signpost to appropriate sources of advice and help.

    Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

    Informal peer to peer support service for members who are looking for guidance from their peers on workplace issues, interpersonal difficulties, return to work options or non-clinical concerns.

    The Royal College of Psychiatrists mental health page

    An excellent source of information; from fact sheets on specific mental health issues, and supporting someone with a mental health condition to training to become a mental health professional.

    Psychiatrists' Support Service, Royal College of Psychiatrists

    A confidential support and advice telephone helpline to for Members or Associates of the College.  It covers  addictions, bullying and harassment, career pathway, discrimination, examinations, involvement with the General Medical Council or the National Clinical Assessment Service - this is not an exhaustive list.

    UK organisation which works around all aspects of professional boundaries and prevention of boundary violation.

    NHS Health Careers

    Information service about the range of 350 or so careers available in health. Part of Health Education England.

    Medical Women's Federation

    Represents the interests of women doctors to government and national bodies, bringing together women trying to advance their medical careers.

    Return To Work Knowledge Base

    A free online service providing the best available research on Occupational Medicine in an easy to read format for employees, employers, treaters and insurers.
