Staying safe online

Mobile and devices

In light of the "WannaCry" ransomware cyber attack, here are some tips for members on how to be safe online.

At work

If you see a ransomware screen on your system, then you are infected.

Do not switch on your network or your computer without explicit advice and instruction from your local IT department or provider.

At home

  • Run Windows Update
  • Make sure your antivirus product is up to date and run a scan
  • Back up your data - you can't be held to ransom if you've got the data somewhere else.
  • Be vigilant about 'phishing' scams - do not click on suspicious emails or links
  • Be mindful about using public wi-fi, particularly if you are not asked for a password; hackers can access your data through these unsecured gateways
