Use the employer handbook toolkit

For GP partners

We continually strive to improve the services available to you and your practice and have recently introduced two new elements.

These include a detailed employment handbook and a discretionary contribution towards employment tribunal damages awards and approved settlements cover at no additional cost.

Our user-friendly employment handbook provides vital information on:

  • your responsibilities as an employer
  • initial guidance on the appropriate steps to follow
  • the legal framework employers are required to work within
  • example policies, contracts etc which can be adapted to members' individual requirements
  • best practice advice

At no additional cost, we may provide a discretionary contribution to final damages awards and approved settlements of up to £50,000 to qualifying employer members who follow the advice provided by the BMA Employer Advisory Service or equivalent service in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Terms and conditions apply.

  • What are people saying about the service?

Don’t just take our word for it... here’s some of the feedback we’ve received from members requiring assistance:

All practice managers would find this service invaluable

‘I would like to thank you for all your assistance during my recent project of updating our staff contracts and handbook. Without the service from the BMA I would have had to use a costly employment law specialist. It is hard to believe that such a good service is a standard part of our membership. The advice you gave was totally up to the minute and you spent a great deal of time looking at my existing contracts and then on the telephone assisting me with specific issues.

'You also provided me with some very helpful policy templates. Your explanations of legal issues were clear and you always explained the implications behind any action I might take. I felt like you were working just for me, rather than me being just a case number. All practice managers would find this service invaluable.’

I was floundering with absolutely no idea what to do before you stepped in to help

‘I was floundering with absolutely no idea what to do before you stepped in to help. I am so grateful. I felt you were the first person who truly had my best interests at heart and was fighting with me to get things done. I can’t tell you what that means. It is the ethos I have always had with my patients. Thank you!’

An absolutely fantastic service, run by experts!

‘I have used the BMA Employer Advisory Service on a few occasions now. I was not sure whether it would provide the help and support we needed. How wrong could I be! The service is excellent. The advisors are knowledgeable, practical, offer fantastic support and guidance and are contactable.

The service provided an oasis of calm for me at time of crisis. We had assumed that we would need to involve a solicitor at some stage, but in fact, that wasn’t necessary. An absolutely fantastic service, run by experts!’

First point of contact whenever we need to seek advice regarding employment issues

‘We have used the Employer Advisory Service on a number of occasions and find the advice we receive to be excellent; comprehensive advice in a timely fashion followed up with suggested wording of documents, where appropriate. They are the first point of contact whenever we feel the need to seek advice regarding employment issues. Would highly recommend using them.’
