Update: Government offers assurances to SAS doctors (October 2018)

In September the SASC committee chair Amit Kochhar met with the Secretary of State to raise concerns of SAS doctors following the 2018 pay award announcement for doctors in England. We challenged the Government to agree to our Charter and demand that the Associate Specialist grade be re-introduced. The initial response from Secretary of State for Health and Social Care contains three commitments for SAS doctors:

  • A commitment in principle to reopening the associate specialist grade to improve recognition and reward for SAS doctors as part of an overall reform of the SAS contract. We will be meeting with the government and employers shortly to discuss how this can happen.

  • All trusts will be expected to implement the 2014 BMA SAS charter, that sets out minimum conditions and appropriate support and development for SAS doctors.

  • The government will seek to ensure that money allocated by HEE for SAS doctor development fund is accessed and fully utilised.

We know doctors want more detail and our negotiators will be working to secure firm and clear commitments on the above as well as other changes we want to see.
