Appraisal tips for clinical academics

Women in Academic Medicine Conference

In line with the principles of the Follett Review Report, the appraisal of clinical academics should be done jointly by the substantive (university) and honorary (NHS) employer.

The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) has published appraisal guidance for clinical academics:

We would also advise that:

  • NHS component of the appraisal should be carried out by the organisation with which you have a prescribed connection
  • the appointment of the NHS appraiser should be in line with the trust appraisal policy
  • the outcome of appraisal will be shared with the Responsible Officer (RO) to enable the RO to make a revalidation recommendation

The General Medical Council has published a prescribed connection tool to help clinical academics identify their designated body, this tool can be found on the GMC website.
